 On the banks of Wallis Lake near the sea just south of Taree in northern NSW, Tuncurry is a sister town to Forster on the other side of the lake and to which it is joined by a road bridge. The Aboriginal meaning of the town’s name is ‘many fish’ and Tuncurry certainly lives up to it.
This place truly abounds in seafood - a wide variety of fish, prawns and oysters are in special abundance. A fair-sized commercial fishing fleet operates from here and many of the fisherfolk are of Greek and Italian origin, which explains the colourful and exuberant festivities which surround the annual ‘blessing of the fleet’ in October.
There is an annual Oyster Festival, also held in October. NSW's tallest tree, named The Grandis, which stands 84.3m tall, is to be found on the quaintly-named Wing Wauk Road turnoff 5km north of town. The ocean-bordering Myall Lakes and Booti Booti National Parks, are spectacular national treasures awaiting to be discovered by hired houseboat.
