Taree, 320 km north of Sydney, is not only home to the eminently photographic Big Oyster - restaurant and curiosity bi-valve shop – but, as the hub of the Manning River Valley, it is also the focal point of a year-long calendar of sporting and cultural events.
Taree’s special dates diary includes the Easter Aquatic Festival, the Manning Beef Week, and the non-Conventional Homes Tour and Environ fair held during the NSW June holiday weekend. But you can drop in at any old time to visit the Manning Regional Art Gallery. The nearby old river towns of Croki and Tinonee give an historic perspective of the region.
With 150km of waterways, the Manning River is a popular venue for all kinds of water sports including sailing, waterskiing and fishing. In the school holidays Manning River Cruises run a variety of cruises between Taree, Wingham and Manning Point. Taree is the starting point for many scenic tours, including beaches and headlands, rainforests and mountain plateaus, waterfalls and grazing and dairy country.
On the coast, about 25km northeast of Taree, is Crowdy Bay National Park which provides good opportunities for swimming and surf fishing and is a particularly popular area with birdwatchers
