The Blue Mountains town of Springwood, 105km west of Sydney and the second-biggest town in the Blue Mountains,
after Katoomba,
was the home for 50 years of the late and lamented painter Norman Lindsay. Lindsay’s lovely home is open to visitors who might wonder what all the fuss was about when they gaze upon the vivid paintings that adorn the walls. In his time, of course (Lindsay died aged 90 in 1969), the artist was a real thorn in the side of conservatives who were shocked by his explicit drawings, paintings and engravings - principally of well-rounded women.
Lindsay’s home is well worth a visit - for its atmosphere as much as for the eclectic collection of paintings, sculptures and bric-a-brac on display.
One of the hidden treasures of Springwood is Martin’s Lookout, at the end of Farm Road. The lookout is accessible by car in dry weather and is a short walk from the end of the dirt road. Martin’s Lookout is an ideal spot to visit to escape from the world for a while.
