Soldiers Point is one of a string of resort and fishing villages set on the shores of picturesque Port Stephens, an hour’s drive north of Newcastle. Two and a half times the size of Sydney Harbour and bound by white-sand beaches, the aquamarine Port Stephens is a magnificent waterway stretching 24km inland from its volcanic headlands.
Behind the beaches, a natural bushland fringe, a riot of colour in spring, completes this coastal Eden. The port’s deep waters teem with fish and you can hop a charter to try your luck with the off-shore big-game or watch whales and dolphin at play.
There are pleasure cruises on the bay and into the adjoining Myall Lakes system. The workers at the Botanic Gardens near here are dedicated to growing, conserving and promoting local plants, which are splendidly represented in the 360ha of the gardens. They’re open to visitors seven days a week and are definitely worth a visit between bouts of fishing and swimming.
