On the mid-NSW coast, about a 10-minute drive east off the Pacific Highway just south of Taree, Old Bar is a superb fishing village at the end of a winding road. It is graced by excellent surfing beaches, which, coupled with the Manning River estuary, provide excellent fishing. The beach is also backed by some delightful picnic areas.
A 2 km drive inland will take you to a turn south through Wallkabi Point to nearby Saltwater, a small holiday village which boasts the region's finest surfing beach. The beach, which is backed by a lagoon that is quite safe for young children, stretches 6km north toward Old Bar. The Kiwarrak State Forest offers a cool alternative to the sun and sand, and its not far back to Taree and The Big Oyster. Obviously, this is a favourite getaway spot for Taree folk, and you’ll find them here in motels, under canvas and in their caravans - and there are plenty of facilities for all tastes and budgets. The resort villages of Harrington and Crowdy Head on the edge of the Crowdy Bay National Park lie just to the north of the mouth of the Manning River on which Taree stands.
