At the northern end of Queensland's balmy Sunshine Coast, Noosa Heads is a favourite holiday destination. While it is no longer the sleepy village it once was, the low-rise nature of the development has maintained a unique feel to the town. Locals flock here for the day, the weekend or longer, while those from the southern states head here for some sun and surf. The heart of Noosa is Hastings Street, famed for its cafes, restaurants, galleries and boutiques. Stroll along the footpath and drink in the sights - when you need a rest, have a cappuccino or a meal and indulge in the sport of people-watching.
Swimmers can bathe off Main Beach or in the calm waters of the Noosa River. There are also many secluded coves with small beaches - some of them are popular with nude bathers. If you are a keen angler, Noosa offers a wide choice of headland, surf or estuarine fishing. Water sports enthusiasts are well catered for, with boats and other craft for hire along the river. A great day out is a trip up the Noosa River to the Everglades. The riverbanks are home to all manner of birdlife including cormorants, osprey eagles, ibises and cockatoos.
Noosa National Park is the most visited national park in Australia and it is within walking distance of Hastings Street. Take the coastal path past stunning viewpoints to the Devil's Kitchen and Hell's Gates and be on the lookout for the koalas that live in the park.
Eumundi market is something of an institution in the area, offering a wide range of arts and crafts as well as other goods. The hinterland behind the Sunshine Coast is also noted for its arts and crafts and the pretty villages of Maleny and Montville are well worth a visit.
