With its scenic combination of an island-dotted river, oceans beaches, bush, fascinating walkways and the siren call of fish, Nambucca Heads on the mid-north coast of NSW has always been a magical place.
Since the Pacific Highway decided to by-pass the town at the mouth of the Nambucca River 510km north-east of Sydney, it has become blessed. No longer do rumbling semi-trailers smoke by to destroy the serenity of the night.
This is truly the resort town that does have everything - natural beauty, the call of the sea and surf, tranquillity, easily-accessed lookouts, a challenging island golf course, a climate scientists rate ‘the most enviable in Australia’ and an impressive range of restaurants and cuisine.
You can step back in time through the Headland Historical Museum whose collection includes photographs and artefacts recapturing the colonial days and the history of the regional timber and shipping industries.
Scale models of NSW trains of yesteryear rumble along in the Nambucca Valley Model Railway display on Pelican Crescent while the signature Nambucca Mosaic Sculpture focuses on the maritime essence of the region.
