Kempsey Holiday Information On the mid-north coast of NSW and cradled in the Macleay River Valley 430 kilometres north of Sydney, Kempsey is a large rural town supporting district dairy farms and growing tourism and light industries - including the famous Aussie hat company, Akubra.

The river settlement, which is located at the halfway point between Sydney and Brisbane, dates back to the 1830s and the town’s development from logging village to vibrant, modern town of about 10,000 residents is faithfully recorded in the Macleay River Historical Society's award-winning museum which shares the singular, Glenn Murcett-designed Kempsey Cultural Centre with the Tourist Information Office. The museum collection is noteworthy for the depth of its pre-European material and Aboriginal artefacts.

The local reaches of the river attract keen fishermen, while the popular oceanside resort of South West Rocks lies just 35km to the north-east. Tourist river cruisers operate from South West Rocks.
