Find bargain family Accommodation in the Pilbarra
One of Australia’s most interesting and visually arresting regions is undoubtedly the Pilbara in north-western WA, of which Karratha is the biggest town.
In a state of isolated places, Karratha is certainly a long way away - some 1535 kilometres north of Perth. On Nickel Bay, with the islands of the Dampier Archipelago just offshore, Karratha is a young town, created in 1968 to house and service workers on the Hammersley Iron Project.

But it has been the huge North West Shelf Gas Project - the biggest natural resource development ever undertaken in Australia - that keeps Karratha going. The fishing up here is outstanding, especially offshore, and they celebrate it with a major gamefishing tournament run out of neighbouring Dampier in August or September each year. The view from Queens Lookout will give you a lasting impression of some of the 42 islands that make-up the Dampier Archipelago . A visit to Karratha is not complete without an excursion to Deep Gorge, an area rich in Aboriginal rock paintings and engravings.
