Huskisson
Find bargain family accommodation on the South Coast
A laid-back seaside resort town 24km south-east of Nowra on the shores of Jervis Bay, Huskisson was named after William Huskisson, colonial secretary between 1827 and 1829.
Underpinned by a shipbuilding industry, settlement began in the 1860’s and the industry flourished using local timbers for sailing vessels and steamers. George Dent arrived in 1861 bringing sawyers and shipwrights who launched a thriving ship-building industry at the mouth of Currambene Creek. Built in the local yards in 1912 for Sydney Harbour service , the ferry Lady Denman was towed home in 1981 and now houses a maritime museum. The pensioned-off ferry shares the Lady Denman Heritage Complex with the Museum of Jervis Bay Science and the Sea.
Today, Huskisson on the NSW South Coast has a variety of shops, licensed clubs, restaurants,take-aways and the Laddie Timbery Aboriginal Art and Craft Centre which not only sells wares made or produced on site, but presents regular digeridoo-playing, boomerang-throwing and bush tucker-cooking performances. Regular cruises on Jervis Bay leave from Huskisson wharf. Accommodation is available in B&Bs, a hotel, motels, caravan parks and holiday units.
