Hervey Bay on Queensland's Fraser Coast is touted as 'Australia’s family aquatic playground,' and the city and the chain of smaller resorts that hug this sheltered shoreline live up to the promotion.
With the world’s largest sand island, Fraser, absorbing the Pacific’s force, there is no surf, and bathing is safe for everyone from grandad to toddler. It is also a secure haven for fishing.
Then, of course, there is the main attraction - the whales. The humpbacks begin taking up their annual station in the bay in August and continue to frolic in the warm, calm waters of the bay through to mid-October before they head south to the food rich Antarctic for the summer. A large fleet of cruisers licensed to take whale-watching passengers into the bay are based locally. Their skippers are experienced in the ways of the whales and can virtually assure every passenger of a close encounter with these gentle leviathans of the ocean. There are daily links to Fraser Island from Hervey Bay.
