Blackheath - Govetts Leap Named by Governor Lachlan Macquarie during an 1815 tour of inspection because of its charred appearance, Blackheath is the highest town in the Blue Mountains. And befitting its lofty location, the town is central to three easily-accessible lookouts commanding panoramic views of the Govett Gorge and the Grose Valley. The National Parks and Wildlife Service maintains a heritage centre and display alongside the lookout at Govett’s Leap.

In town you'll find a statue commemorating Govett, the bushranger who seems to be more steeped in myth than fact. It is said that when being pursued by the police, Govett preferred certain death to surrender, and leapt over the cliff with his unfortunate horse - thereby naming the spectacular lookout.

There are many more lookouts, bushwalks and scenery to enjoy in Blackheath, particularly during Spring when the rhododendrons and azaleas are in full bloom at Bacchante Gardens. There are also pleasant tea-rooms and craft shops to browse.

Festivals: Rhododendron Festival (November), Yulefest (July)
