Avoca Beach is a popular holiday town on the New South Wales Central Coast. It boasts a long beach, protected at each end by rocky headlands, and good surfing conditions.
Behind the beach is Avoca Lake, the perfect swimming spot for families with young children. To the south of Avoca Beach lies Copacabana Beach, with Captain Cook Lookout at its northern end, featuring extensive coastal views. In the area, you can take a cruise or tour, including sea kayaking.
We are indebted to Captain James Cook for the prosaic naming of First Point a lookout commanding sweeping views of the coast. A cairn explains that Cook's attention was drawn to three prominent headlands as he sailed by in 1770.
He named them First Point, Second Point (now known as Mourawaring Point) and Third Point (Bombi Point).
As a bonus, Avoca has a rock walking trail that skirts the bluff protecting the southern arm of the beach. The rocks give access to some prime fishing holes.
Avoca is also within comfortable driving distance of the regional capital, Gosford, and all the other beaches, peerless lakes systems, natural bush reserves, major waterways, restaurant enclaves and theme parks that make the Central Coast one of the hottest tourist destinations on Australia's east coast. And it is all within an hour’s drive of the northern suburbs of Sydney and Newcastle.
